Messages can be sent to the intelligence agencies on the frequencies that are intercepted by the NSA and GCHQ. An independent mesh network in Berlin’s Government District recaptured the virtual communication space. A collective conversation space in which all have equal rights has been taking the space of secret wiretapping.

qaul.net implements a redundant, open communication principle, in which wireless-enabled computers and mobile devices can directly form a spontaneous network. Chat and twitter functions are possible independent of internet and cellular networks. qaul can spread like a virus, and an Open Source Community can modify it freely.

In a time of communication blackouts in places like Egypt, Burma, and Tibet, and given the large power outages often caused by natural disasters, qaul has taken on the challenge of critically examining existing communication pathways while simultaneously exploring new horizons.

While the majority of people are looking for exotic and adventurous for holidays, the prevailing necessity of mobility and improvisation are a bitter reality for people under precarious living conditions. HOTEL GELEM invites the viewer to participate in extreme living conditions, and invents new forms of exchange, illustration and reflection of the phenomena, which should have happened ’never again’ after the second world war. HOTEL GELEM leads to places in which romantic transfiguration coincides with racial persecution – and it overcomes those new walls in Europe that divide our society dramatically.

It creates new Internet addresses (ccTLD) for unacknowledged groups such as the Tibetans, the Tamils, the Uigurs and others. As a community project, New Nations tests new forms of global togetherness and communicative exchange.
